Botox vs. Dysport: Here’s What You Need to Know

Have you been noticing more fine lines or wrinkles in your face? Have you tried all the anti-aging creams and wrinkle serums you see in magazines but only seen minimal results? If so, you are in the right place!

Fine lines and wrinkles occur when we age. The cells in our bodies lose their fullness and elasticity over time, which gives the appearance of wrinkles. Our bodies do miraculous things and animating our facial expressions are just one of them, but we don’t have to keep the wrinkles and expression lines from all the memories we have made!

Two of the most popular wrinkle-reducing drugs are Botox and Dysport. Injected into the skin using a small needle, once settled, the neurotoxins prevent the muscles from contracting which visibly reduces the pattern of movement that causes wrinkles and fine lines. Dysport and Botox injections are nonsurgical skin rejuvenation and effectively reduce wrinkles temporarily. Botox is produced by Allergan, while Dysport is produced by Galderma, and both are heavily researched and FDA approved. When asking Kirstie Robinson, our in-house certified and expert registered Nurse injector here at Fountain of You MD in Virginia Beach, to describe the differences between the two popular neurotoxins she mentioned, “It’s like comparing Fendi to Prada. They are both great products, and you can’t go wrong with either.” Botox is highly requested and the most commonly known neurotoxin, but clients should not disregard the potential use of Dysport. For many patients who have previously tried Botox, Dysport starts working faster lasts longer and often requires fewer units!

The most common injection sites for Botox or Dysport are the horizontal lines on your forehead, the glabella (the space between the eyebrows) also known as frown lines, and the fine lines that occur around your eyes also known as crow’s feet. These are great locations to begin your treatments either as a preventative measure or to reduce any visible wrinkles in the areas. There are many other common usages of Dysport and Botox including but not limited to a reduction of: gummy smile, lip borders (called lip pop), under the eyes (also called the jelly roll), jawline and neck, smile lines, smoker’s lines (also called perioral), marionette lines around the mouth, dimples in the chin, eyebrow lift, bunny lines, and neck bands (platysmal bands) to improve the appearance of aging skin. Remember every face is unique and each injection treatment plan is tailored to the specific needs or requests of the individual.

There are many steps you can take to ensure the best results from your neurotoxin treatment. Introducing an over-the-counter 100mg vitamin C supplement twice a day (AM & PM) helps strengthen the walls of your blood vessels which helps prevent bruising. Over-the-counter, Arnica is also a great natural preventative and can help with any bruising or swelling. Avoiding alcohol 24 hours before or after your appointment is crucial. Alcohol thins your blood which can result in more swelling or bleeding at the injection site and can reduce the overall retention of your injections before it has settled! Remember Dysport and Botox aftercare is just as important as pre-treatment advice!
