The human body is packed with glands that produce and secrete hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers which have intense effects on overall health and our biological functions, like growth, immune function, metabolism, and sexual reproduction. A state of hormonal balance is necessary for the body to survive and function optimally. Hormonal imbalance can produce too much or too little of certain hormones.
Low libido, or low sex drive, affects both men and women. The sexual desires of men and women naturally fluctuate over time. Extreme highs and lows can be attributed to stress, major life events, certain medications, smoking, eating disorders, alcohol or drug use, diet, and the often-overlooked endocrine disease: hormone imbalance.
