Testosterone Loss, an Epidemic

Testosterone Loss, an Epidemic

I often tell my patients our grandfathers had twice the level of testosterone than we do. But because of modern lifestyles and environmental factors, many men experience loss of testosterone even at early ages. The average age of patients in my hormone replacement and anti-aging innovation clinic, Fountain of You, MD, in Virginia Beach is only 38 years old.

How Lifestyle Affects Testosterone

Obesity is definitely a huge factor in lowering levels of testosterone. It is estimated that approximately 70% of Americans are overweight, and, statistically, 70% of men over 50 years old have low testosterone.

Fat cells within the body convert testosterone into estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels make it extremely difficult to lose weight. That’s why many men find it harder to lose weight the larger they get and the older they get.

In my opinion, the biggest culprit in both the low T epidemic and the obesity epidemic is processed foods. We recommend our patients try a Paleo diet, or caveman diet.. This diet consists of non-processed foods like meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. The Paleo rule is to shop around the outside of the grocery store, where fresher whole foods are sold, and stay out of the center aisles where processed foods are located.

Our food supply, which has been altered by pesticides and herbicides, plastics used in packaging and additives in foods, may also affect testosterone levels. The infiltration of soy, which can be estrogenic, as a low-cost protein booster in the American diet has contributed to rising estrogen levels. These factors make it even harder to control the hormones in our bodies.

Inactivity and stress also certainly contribute to the problems with testosterone and obesity. Americans experience high levels of stress, which affects physical and mental health. Many people sit behind a desk and get no exercise or very little vigorous activity in their days.

Low testosterone has been related to the opioid crisis, marijuana usage, alcohol abuse, and excess caffeine. All of these substances of abuse are known to lower testosterone and increase the conversion to estrogen.

While getting more exercise and eating a healthier diet may help testosterone levels, it may not be enough to overcome the effects of low T. Hormone replacement therapy can boost your testosterone levels, improving your mood and energy levels. When provided by experts, hormone therapy is safe and effective.

I am very proud of the fact that at Fountain of You, MD, 96% of our patients saw an improvement in their testosterone levels. We can help you feel younger again with hormone replacement therapy, weight management and more. Contact us today at 757-644-4615 to get back your energy.

Is My Changing Sex Drive Normal?

If a lack of interest in intercourse continues or returns, it is a major issue causing stress and angst. Doctors now term this condition hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Historically, it was considered a psychiatric disorder. The system used by psychiatry was never designed to include physical problems as a cause.

A wide range of factors can cause low sex drive in men and women. It is commonly due to stress and undiagnosed low testosterone levels. Sudden decreases in libido may also be a symptom of underlying medical conditions such as: erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, depression, drug or alcohol abuse, anemia, cancer, sleep disorders, diabetes mellitus, or hypothyroidism. Lifestyle habits, like smoking, decrease blood flow, which may reduce arousal. Fatigue and certain surgeries may lower down your performance and your interest for intimacy. Pain during intercourse or lack of orgasms can also result in the same. Too little sleep, stress, and intimacy issues can affect changes in performance. These factors also negatively influence our general health, as our immune system works best when we are well rested and relaxed.

For a robust libido, you need energy, relaxation, and time. Stress management, getting good sleep, and relaxation techniques can be helpful in restoring a healthy sexual appetite. Maintaining an active lifestyle along with a healthy diet, greatly improve overall health while relieving stress, encouraging better sleep, and improving feelings of self-worth. Light, regular exercise not only improves your mood while reducing the risk of heart disease and keeping sperm healthy, it also positively impacts mental clarity and performance.

It has been estimated that approximately 26-52% of women and 13-28% of men have complained of decreasing interest in intercourse. The average patient and clinician are faced with the absence of an approved treatment. The knowledge base for diagnosis and treatment is low but rapidly expanding.

Recently, there has been major progress in the development of tools to assess this disorder. Fortunately, there are areas of treatment that have evolved. Psychological therapy, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and prescription medications are all promising, progressing, exciting areas of treatment. There is evidence of effectiveness in all three approaches, specifically with testosterone replacement therapy for men and women.

As with most medical conditions, an individualized approach is often highly effective. Sex therapy and counseling is often helpful for couples. Switching or stopping certain medications may often improve your interest. Hormonal therapy may reduce pain for intimacy. Testosterone plays an important role in male and female sexual health & function. It is often prescribed to boost poor libido and is often very effective.

Variations in sex drive are normal, but a significant deviation from baseline libido can be a cause for concern. Libido varies from person to person. Sharp decreases or increases in the desire to have physical intimacy could warrant a visit to a doctor for further evaluation and management.

Sermorelin and Ipamorelin, are they really the fountain of youth?

Sermorelin and Ipamorelin, have we found the fountain of youth? While no single ingredient can reverse the aging process, Sermorelin and Ipamorelin have been proven to slow hormonal failure that occurs during the aging process.

Sermorelin and Ipamorelin are human growth hormone-releasing peptides (GHRH or GRF) that stimulate the pituitary gland. They preserve not only youthful anatomy but also youthful physiology. These peptides are found to be very well tolerated, without the appetite stimulation and increase in cortisol seen in other hormones in their class, known as growth hormone secretagogues. Also useful in the treatment of age-related conditions, osteoporosis, obesity, and various chronic inflammatory diseases, the benefits of Sermorelin and Ipamorelin are tremendous, with our patients noting:

  • increased energy
  • improved sex drive
  • increased lean muscle mass
  • decreased body fat
  • improved sleep
  • increased bone mineral content
  • quicker recovery from workouts and injuries
  • improved mental clarity
  • increased collagen production and skin elasticity

Beginning peptide therapy is easy. After a blood test to measure your IGF (insulin-like growth factor), our physician will prescribe the peptide best suited for you. The medication is administered by you, from the comfort of your own home by an injection to the abdomen. You’ll notice results during the first weeks of therapy, and they will continue to increase over the following months.

Our core belief is that hormone replacement improves health, energy levels, and the general sense of well-being. We understand that by effecting positive changes in body composition, by increasing muscle mass and strength, increasing bone density, decreasing fat mass while improving cardiovascular parameters will improve the quality of life and lead to better general health.

Sermorelin and Ipamorelin may lead us toward the fountain of youth!

Vampire Facials

There’s no set-in-stone way to be a vampire, especially with the evil ones.

Cameron Black

Let’s talk about this Vampire Facial!

Microneedling with PRP is one of our favorite services due to the amazing results coupled with minimal discomfort and downtime. Anyone needing to improve wrinkles, scars, sun damaged or discolored skin can benefit! The depth of our microneedling device is adjustable from 0.2mm to 2.5mm depending on the necessary level of correction. The tool causes tiny injuries to the skin, allowing the PRP to penetrate deeper. These wounds also stimulate collagen production.

We know first hand that cosmetic procedures (such as hair restoration and skin rejuvenation) using growth factors have amazing outcomes. The Vampire Facial, also known as microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), surged in popularity after Kim Kardashian braved the procedure on her reality show.

Treatments using PRP are effective in avoiding risky side effects and invasive surgical procedures. PRP offers faster recovery time and supports the body’s natural healing process organically.

The procedure itself is simple:
  • Your blood is drawn by our technician, then placed in a centrifuge where the platelet-rich plasma is separated from the rest of your blood.
  • We apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment areas while the PRP is being prepared.
  • After about 45 mins, your skin is gently cleansed off.
  • The PRP is applied to the skin while the microneedling device is glided over your skin.
  • After the treatment, the remaining PRP is applied to the skin.

Slight redness after the procedure can last for 1-2 days. During this time, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. More importantly, use sunscreen!  Protecting the skin from harmful UV rays is often overlooked after cosmetic procedures.
This is an actual client selfie minutes after the treatment!

Benefits are noted after about 1 week and continue to improve over several weeks. We recommend this treatment as a series of three, 4-6 weeks apart. Glow on, girl!
